Money Saving Tips for your boiler and central heating system

Published by : Richard on 21 March 2022

Here are some tips on how to save money and energy:

  1. Get your boiler serviced every year to ensure that it is performing well and remains efficient, you are less likely to face boiler breakdowns and emergency repair costs
  2. Update your boiler system, if you are running an older system it could be costing you more money. Newer boiler systems are more efficient overall.
  3. Monitor the temperature of your boiler regularly and your hot water settings to reduce costs, keeping your boiler turned up to the max when you are only going to add cold water to cool it down is an unnecessary waste.
  4. The average room temperature for comfort is around 19 degrees, any increases in temperature will end up costing you more. Increasing the temperature by just one degree could be costing you 10% more a year.
  5. Utilise a timer for your heating where possible so that it only comes on when needed, older boilers will have this facility on the boiler itself.
  6. Smart thermostats are the modern way of programming your boiler, as it hooks up to your smart device you can control it from anywhere and it can even adjust according to the weather outside.
  7. Insulate your hot water tank (if you have one) this will ensure that heat is not lost from the stored water and conserves energy as it is not having to constantly reheat the water
  8. Keep your radiators clean and dust free, regular cleaning will allow you to benefit more from the heat generated by the radiators.
  9. Turn down or turn off radiators in rooms that are rarely used to avoid energy waste.
  10. Check that your radiators are evenly heated to ensure that there is no trapped air within the system or sludge build up.
