What is a Central Heating Magnetic Filter

Published by : Richard on 26 November 2021

Magnetic filters pick up magnetic particles that float inside a buildings heating system. As your heating system ages, it’s natural for rust and corrosion to occur which combines with other such substances creating a black sludge build up that will eventually lead to your heating system performing less effectively and/or could cause the system to breakdown.

How does it work?

Central heating magnetic filter attracts the corroded metals which stops the build-up of sludge and blockages within the heating system, allowing the water to continue to flow and prolongs the life of your homes heating system.

How would l know if I need a central heating magnetic filter?

  • Firstly, have a feel of each of your radiators. If you notice cold spots at the top of the radiator while the bottom is warm this usually indicates black sludge could be blocking the flow of the water inside.
  • Rust spots on the radiator and leaks could also be caused by the build of sludge.
  • Hot water or/and radiators that are only lukewarm.
  • Strange noises from the boiler such as banging also indicates there might be a blockage somewhere in your heating system.

If you allow the issues, outlined above, to continue you risk damaging your heating system, incurring higher energy costs and eventually you will have to replace the boiler or radiators which can be very expensive.

Investing and fitting a central heating magnetic filter will help to safeguard your heating system, saving you money in the long run.

How do you fit it?

Usually, the central heating magnetic filter is fitted to a new boiler upon installation though it can certainly be fitted to your current boiler or system, during its annual service, by a certified gas safe engineer who will need to clean it annually as part of your boiler service.

Is it worth it?

Given the evidence, a central heating magnetic filter is a cost-effective solution and well worth investing in to prolong the life of your boiler and heating system and will also help keep your energy bills down.
