Gas Boilers Are Getting Better

Why Gas Boilers will not be obsolete for many years to come.

Published by : Deanne Pettifer on 01 June 2023

In recent years, the world has gone through a radical shift towards green technology, and gas boilers seem to be on the brink of extinction. With the UK government announcing its ambitious plans to phase out gas boilers by 2035, it's no wonder people are increasingly turning to electric and other eco-friendly heating solutions. Despite this, traditional gas boilers still have a role to play in heating homes and will not be obsolete for many years to come. In this blog post, we will examine why gas boilers will still be relevant in the near future.

1. Renewable Sources Cannot Meet the Demand
Renewable energy sources are an excellent solution to the climate crisis, and they're getting cheaper and better every year. However, renewable sources often struggle to meet the demand, particularly during peak usage times. This can cause the grid to become unstable, leading to blackouts. Gas boilers can help to balance the grid by using excess renewable energy to heat homes. This is known as a "biomethane blend" and can reduce a home's carbon footprint significantly.

2. Cost-effective
Even with the increases in renewable efficiency, electricity still costs homeowners much more than gas. According to energy providers, gas prices are 4p per units compared to the 16p per unit of electricity. Heating your home using electricity, rather than gas, can result in an increase in annual fuel bills to provide the same amount of heating output.

3. Homes' Insufficient Energy Efficiency
Many of the UK's homes are still relatively old and have poor insulation and double glazing. Upgrading a home's insulation is famously expensive and can often result in the loss of living space. This can also be time-consuming and realistically not feasible for all homeowners. On the other hand, when using gas, it's easier to maintain the level of heating throughout a property's size. Gas output is not dependent on a building's energy efficiency, so you won't have to compromise on comfort in the fight to keep your energy bills within budget.

4. Strong R&D
Gas boiler technology is still advancing, and new models are becoming more efficient every year. Modern boilers use much less fuel than compared to older models and have a reduced carbon footprint. Manufacturers invest significant amounts into Research and Development that ensures that gas boilers continue to evolve and adapt to meet with new environmental regulations from the government.

Conclusion:

Although the world is moving towards a greener future, gas boilers will not be obsolete for many years to come. The transition to renewable energy is a long and complicated process, and traditional gas boilers still have a crucial role to play. The key for both homeowners and commercial industries is to spread the use of renewable energy sources, supported by the use of gas boilers as the "bridge technology", to enable the country to transition towards carbon-neutral living styles. As research in the gas boiler industry continues, we can expect more advances in technology, leading to the production of even more efficient, sustainable, and eco-friendly models. With gas being a cheaper option, the transition towards electric heating will, therefore, be a slow one.
